Shadows and Light
Joni Mitchell’s Shadows and Light has been a favorite of mine for many years now, but I’m embarrassed to find out only now, there is a video recording of this live performance from 199035ya.
I am in heaven. Could there be a greater band? Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Lyle Mays, Don Alias, and the great Michael Brecker all given room to create a color palette that Mitchell weaves her magic over. And it is the colors. These musicians have such unique individual sounds, one might think the result would be too busy. It’s not. The combination is perfection.
The performance of Goodbye Porkpie Hat (18:40), a tribute to Lester Young written by Charles Mingus, is absolutely masterful, and for those who want to know why they are always hearing about what a great bass player Jaco Pastorius was, you will find out during this performance. Listen to what he does on Dry Cleaner From Des Moines.
Highly recommend.
