Kicking and Screaming
My slow somewhat hypocritical move away from enshittification.
Google:
- moved away from Chrome based browsers
- sadly moved away from Firefox because the Mozilla group has gone insane with AI. (using LibreWolf, Gecko based browser, with better privacy and AI out.)
- Still heavily using YouTube, trying to mitigate with heavy ad/tracker-blocking
- Still have a couple gmail addresses for accessing YouTube. Those can go and will soon.
- No Google search. Might as well give Google my computer password…
Social Media:
- No Facebook and doing surprisingly well at ignoring Facebook links that are sent to me.
- For most part no Instagram, same as FB trying to ignore Instagram links.
- No Twitter, no Bluesky, no Threads. Mastodon instead. Much better social experience, althought questioning the value of any of it.
Microsoft:
- All out except for GitHub. Making plans to host repositories elswhere as MS has begun trying to ram AI down my throat in VSCode. MS beginning to stick their creepy tendrils into their version of git.
My beloved Apple ecosystem:
- this will be tough, Invested heavily in hardware, software, and services but…
- Apple is dropping all pretense of being the friendly mega-corp
- I’m beginning to transition with software, moving to as many open source solutions as possible. Looking at moving to Linux as Apple obsoletes my hardware with incompatible OS updates.
- Get a dumb phone when my iPhone 11, finally dies.
This are just raw initial thoughts, lots more work and planning to do.
