What Should Go in Notes Anyway?
I’ve made this site. I should populate it with some content. That was my intent after all…
I’d hoped I was building something that would by virtue of its structure, help me to organize my thoughts. Separate the substantial from the ephemeral. I would make places for fleeting thoughts as well as the seeds of more robust explorations. It’s overly ambitious.
I’ve explored all of the note taking apps. I’m using one of them, Obsidian⤴︎, to compose this post. Some do help with organizing, but they all provide the opportunity to pack-rat every single thing a brain runs across. How to organize everything we consume is a problem we don’t need to solve.
If you are trying to acquire deep mastery of a particular subject or skill, a PKM⤴︎ system can be of great value.
If rather, you are trying to manage the onslaught of information living in this media driven world presents, I would suggest a different tool which is already built in to your brain. It’s called forgetting. (I happen to have the deluxe model.)
As you move through your day, remember that a large amount of what you see and observe and can safely be forgotten. Hoover it all up if you like, but then allow yourself to forget it just as easily and without any stress or FOMO⤴︎. Look for the ideas that persist. Focus on those.
