What I've Decided to do About Social Media

The big bugaboo. How much social media. All in? All out? The decision to leave Facebook in 20232ya wasn’t very hard, although if it wasn’t such a horrible publishing platform, it could have remained a great place to find community. Never used Twitter much.

I have a Mastodon account which I’ve enjoyed in sprints. Mastodon has some built in limitations in terms of discoverability (which I consider a plus not a minus) and I’ve had positive interactions there. The thing is, once I started scaling down, I found I was getting a lot of satisfaction just from participating in a relatively small messaging group of people I actually know IRL. I wish I could get them to use Signal, but that’s another…

The key for me in terms of reducing any sense of obligation to participate on public social platforms was to agree (with myself) that it was all going to be completely disposable. I’ll keep some journal like record of my personal activities here in the Moments section of the site. Maybe I’ll share some of those on the socials maybe not. And if I feel compelled to yell into that void on the spur of the moment, there’s no reason I have to post the same here on my own site.

Completely disposable.
